Mitsubishi, which is the Japanese word for three diamonds, has its very earliest roots in the shipping business dating to the 1870s. In 1917, Mitsubishi released its first passenger car, the Model A. The company started mass production of vehicles in 1960 when it launched a compact car, the Mitsubishi 500. Fast forward to 1970 and Mitsubishi Motors Corporations was officially born. Today, it is Japan’s fourth largest car manufacturer.

While Mitsubishi vehicles may have either manual or automatic transmissions, some actually have a hybrid type of transmission that captures features of both. The Sportronic transmission is an automatic transmission with some manual abilities. When driving in the manual mode, there is no clutch to use, although you can shift using the gear paddle. Gear changes can be made automatically or manually, depending on which mode the driver selects.

Why would someone want both a manual and automatic transmission? Well, some drivers prefer the option to override the automatic shifting mechanism when they feel it is necessary, such as when they want to downshift to get better traction and control when driving in a snowstorm. The computer component in the Sportronic transmission prevents damage from shifting improperly by automatically shift the vehicle if the RPMs are too high or too low. However, the Sportronic transmission allows the driver to select and hold the gear for as long as he or she wants, which is an advantage over the manual transmissions.

How does it function? The Sportronic transmission is like a manual transmission except it can select two gears simultaneously. The Sportronic transmission is similar to having two three-speed manual transmissions operating together on the same output shaft. The odd and even number gears are on separate input shafts, with each shaft connected to its own clutch. The odd and even shafts are linked by a transfer gear, and the transmission engine control unit, sensors and solenoid are contained within the transmission valve body.

The 2011 Outlander Sport has the INVECS-III Continuously-Variable Transmission, the company’s newest form of Sportronic transmission. It provides the best of all worlds by delivering improved fuel economy, smooth functioning in the automatic mode and quick shifts in the driver-selected manual shift mode.
