New Transmissions
One of the first models of Pontiac transmissions was the Turbo-Hydramatic 125 transmission. It was first created in 1980 to be used on transverse engine applications and was later renamed the 3T40 transmission. The 3T40 was used in Pontiac vehicles from 1980 until it was discontinued in 2002. Pontiac transmissions are the result of an evolution from the older Turbo-Hydramatic 125 transverse automatic, introduced in the late 1970s, into the 4T family. The 4T60 was designed for transverse engines and includes 4 forward gears and a reverse gear. It was introduced in 1984 for the 1985 line of C-bodies and was changed to electronic controls in 1991, thus becoming the 4T60-E. The 4T60-E has a 245 mm torque converted with various stall speeds and is featured on the 1996 Pontiac Bonneville 3800 V6, 1998 Pontiac Grand Am 2.4 liter, and the 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GT 3800.

In 1997, the 4T65-E was created and phased out the earlier 4T60-E. This transmission included a larger torque converter and an upgrade valve body to help improve its reliability. This is one of many Pontiac transmissions that is rated to handle up to 280 pounds of torque or more. In 2003, the internal electronics of the 4T65-E were changed to a more sophisticated control module. In addition they also toughened up the 4th gear shaft and a new 3rd gear was added. All 4T65-E models such as the M15, MN3, MN7, MD7, and the M76 have either a 245 mm (9.6 in) or a 258 mm (10.2 in) torque converter. Only the 4T65-E M76 has all wheel drive capability, though. These models of 4T65-E are featured in vehicles such as the 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.4 liter V6 and the 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1 liter or 3.8 liter V6. The 4T65E-HD is the same as the 4T65-E only it is has a heavy duty gearbox. It is used on cars with stronger engines such as the LS4 V8 and the supercharged V6. They are coded MN7 – meaning heavy duty. These MN7 Pontiac transmissions are featured on the Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, Grand Prix GXP, and Grand Prix GTP Comp G. Whether you are looking for the elusive 4T65E-HD (MN7) or an older 4T60 transmission, houstonenginerebuild has got your ride covered.
