Suzuki transmissions are used to create a balance between power and economics. Suzuki is known for their use of modern mechanics to create lighter-duty transmissions that are also great on fuel economy because of their design. Suzuki uses the Turbo-Hydramatic 180 transmission in their vehicles. Since 1969, the 180 is an automatic transmission manufactured by General Motors and put into light-duty vehicles. It was introduced to 1989 and has been used in Suzuki transmissions, as a derivative of the Turbo-Hydramatic, which are replicated in Europe and Asia. It is used in variety of longitudinal engine vehicles and is featured in the Suzuki Sidekick from 1989 to 1998. In the early 1990’s the TH180 was renamed the 3L30. It was later phased out by the introduction of the 4L30-E in 1991. The AW5 all-wheel drive transmission is a five-speed transverse drive train for longitudinal engines – developed and produced by Aisin AW, which is now owned by Toyota Motor Company. The AW5’s highlights are its electronically-controlled shifting and final drive ratio of 3.33:1 – making it economically feasible. It is featured in the light SUVs such as the 1999 Suzuki Grand Vitara and the 1999 Suzuki Escudo.

One of the most popular Suzuki transmissions is the AR-5. These Suzuki transmissions feature a five-speed manual drive train that is the customized fabrication of the Aisin Corporation. Its design is featured on longitudinal engines and is rated by Aisin to withstand 260 pounds of torque. It is featured on Grand Vitaras from 1989 to 2001. This transmission is also used by GMC but is renamed the RPO MA5. It is also featured in the 260 horsepower Saturn Sky Red Line which has gear ratios of 3.75, 2.26, 1.51, 1.00, 0.73,and 3.67. In the 220 horsepower GMC Canyon, its gear ratios are 3.75, 2.26, 1.37, 1.00, 0.73, and 3.67 for the reverse gear.
