BMW transmissions have come a long way from its first production car, the Austin 7. It started out with three speed transmission and reverse then progressed to having a synchromesh added several years later. Today, the BMW 760Li and the Gran Turismo of their 5 series cars, boast the 8-speed double clutch automatic transmission developed by ZF Friedrichshafen.

There are several types of transmission in the market today. Most BMW transmissions are 4-speed automatic, 5-speed automatic, and 6-speed manual. The necessity of conserving fossil fuels has led to the development of cars with improved fuel economy. The newly marketed 8-gear transmission, which is capable of 11 percent savings, and the 7-gear transmission, which automatically maintains lower engine speed, was developed with this in mind. Despite this, the gear ratio from first to eighth is akin to that of a sports car’s close transmission.

Automatic transmission is also assisted today by advanced electronics. A good example is the Steptronic technology developed by BMW. Transmissions from gear to gear can be done manually using a button on the steering wheel. Most cars equipped with this also have automatic transmission as part of the choices available when driving. The 8-speed version of this technology takes it a step further, for the fuel conscious, with Auto StartStop and automatically regulated engine speed to keep it low. Another such technological development is DriveLogic. This incorporates sensing technology that identifies whether the car is moving up a slope, down it, or if the rear axle slipped and institutes the right engine speed to assist the driver in these situations. It is also available in the 5-speed and 6-speed varieties.

The BMW transmission’s ratios vary between 4.06 and 4.36 (for first gear), 2.0 and 2.52 (for second gear), 1.0 to 1.66 (for third gear), 1.0 to 1.23 (for fourth gear), and 0.74 to 1.0 (for fifth gear). This mix of gear ratios does not strictly follow either close ratio or wide ratio but is an amalgamation of both to provide the best mix at different driving speeds. The ratios also reflect the guiding principle behind the design of the specific model in which it is used – fuel economy, racing speed, or comfortable ride smoothness.

Through the years, the advances in BMW transmissions have been essential to the quality and comfort, a company known for its luxury and sports models, represents.
