Walter Chrysler founded the company that bares his name in 1925. Transmissions have their origin dating to 1894 when Frenchmen Louis-Rene Panhard and Emile Levassor developed an early manual type of transmission.

Chrysler transmissions made their debut in 1941 with a 4 speed semi-automatic transmission known as a M4 Vacamatic or Simplimatic.

This was followed by the M6 Presto-Matic with a fluid drive, a name created by Chrysler to refer to a transmission driveline. None of Chevy’s early transmissions were really all that innovative though.

In the early years of transmissions 2-speed manuals were common, but Chevy was showing some innovation by using a 3-speed selective sliding transmission. The first truly innovative Chevy transmission was the powerglide transmissions introduced in 1950. These transmissions operated behind a torque converter.

The first 2-speed automatic came in 1954. At this time transmissions were encased in cast iron with no parking pawl, later on aluminum became the standard. The TorqueFlite was Chevy’s trademarked automatic transmission during the mid-1950s. This 3-speed automatic transmission was first introduced in 1956. The A518 was used in trucks.

Turboglide was introduced by Chevy in 1957, but it couldn’t handle the V-8 power output and was discontinued. This was followed by the tough and reliable Hydramatic TH350 (a 3-speed automatic) in the early 1960s. A new Powerglide version was used in the Volkswagen Beetle through 1969. The heavy duty Allison 1000 six-speed was perfect for Chevy’s Silverado line.

Chevy cars were also equipped with Alison, Borg-Warner (including the T-56 6-speed manual transmission introduced in 1993 and manufactured by Tremec since 1998) and Muncie automatic and manual transmissions. The current Tremec TR6060 is ideal for high performance engines. 45RFE has been the 4-speed standard since 1999, while 545RFE is Chevy’s current 5-speed standard.

The light-duty A404 was used by Chevrolet in smaller engine cars in the 1970s, followed by the A470 and A670. The 4-speed automatic A604 is the current standard in Chevy’s Ultradrive transmission line still used today. The 6-speed 62TE was introduced in 2007.

Each Chevy line has specific transmissions associated with it, as they are directly related to performance and the specific engine specs of each line. The 6-speed Hydramatic is the current standard in Chevrolet Suburbans since 2009.

Since it’s inception as a car company in 1925 right up through today Chrysler transmissions have evolved from uninspiring to being among the most reliable in the car/truck industry.
