The Eagle brand went through many changes through the years it was produced, and finding the right transmission can be a bit confusing. American Motors Corporation began producing the Eagle name in 1979, introducing the first 4 wheel drive only car in a 2 door and 4 door sedan, as well as a 4 door wagon. The only transmission offered for this year was a modified Chrysler A988 3 speed automatic with a double planetary gear, aluminum housing, locking torque converter, and a 3rd gear ratio of 1.00: 1. It had a pressure-signal actuated internal clutch for transmissions in the 6 cylinder, 2 wheel drive models.

The 1981 model year would see the addition of a select drive, full-time 4wheel drive/2wheel drive transfer case and a 4 speed manual transmission with helical gears and varying gear ratios to match the 4 or 6 cylinder engines offered. More changes would continue throughout the life of the Eagle name, including the actual ownership of the company itself. Optional motors would be added, and transmission changes would include a wider gear ratio in the 3 speed automatic for better fuel economy, doing away with the lockup torque converter, and adding a 5 speed manual Chrysler transmission that was made standard equipment in 1985. Production of the AMC Eagle ceased in December of 1987 after being purchased by Chrysler Corporation.

When Chrysler purchased American Motors Corporation in August of 1987, new cars were introduced, and new transmissions came with them. The Eagle name, now having become a marque for Chrysler, continued with the Eagle Medallion and Premier utilizing 3 speed and 4 speed automatics, respectively. Then, in mid 1989, the Eagle Talon was launched sporting a 4 speed automatic or a 5 speed manual transmission, to be followed by the Eagle Vision, with the then new Chrysler 42LE automatic. Some of the cars discussed here which bear the Eagle name had Mitsubishi engines and transmissions. Due to a declining market share, Chrysler discontinued the Eagle brand name in 1998, including the Eagle Talon.

Considering the numerous drivetrain options offered by American Motors and Chrysler over the years, finding the correct transmission can be a daunting task. houstonenginerebuild is uniquely qualified to find the correct replacement transmission to fit whichever model Eagle you own.
