One of the first Ford transmissions was the Ford-O-Matic. The 3-speed Ford-O-Matic was introduced in 1950 and then evolved into the Cruise-O-Matic in 1958. It was then redesigned and renamed the Ford FMX transmission. The FMX transmission is a hydraulic controlled rear-wheel drive transmission that has an cast iron case and an aluminum bell housing. Used mostly until 1981, it was then discontinued once more advanced transmissions were created.

Another model of the Ford transmissions family was the C4 transmission – later redesigned and named the Ford C5 transmission. Introduced in 1964, it featured a lighter aluminum bell housing, tail housing, and main case as opposed to the cast iron Cruise-O-Matic transmission. To improve on highway fuel economy, the C5 was created. It was able to improve its fuel efficiency by installing a lock-up clutch in the torque converter allowing it to shift better at higher speeds. Notable vehicles that had this Ford transmission was the 1983 to 1985 Ford Bronco II and the 1986 Ford Aerostar. It was later phased out by the AOD Ford transmissions.

Newer Ford transmissions have been been based off the Ford FMX transmission, which was created in the 1960’s and 1970’s. The Ford Automatic Over Drive (AOD) transmission, for example, was based off the same gearset as the FMX. The AOD transmission was released in 1980 and was Ford’s first automatic transmission to have overdrive capability. In 1991, the Ford AOD was modified with electronic controls and renamed the AODE. The powertrain of the AODE is controlled by the electronic engine control or EEM. The AODE has been featured in the 1994 and 1995 Ford Mustang. It was also used in bigger V8s such as the 1991 Ford Crown Victoria and the 1991 Ford F-Series.

Ford transmissions are exactly what houstonenginerebuild knows about. We are ready to get your Ford transmission to you anywhere in the world. Whether you are looking for an older Cruise-O-Matic or the new version of the AODE, which was created in 1993 with the Lincoln Mark VIII and was named the 4R70W. We have it all. Ford lovers state that the 4R70W transmission is one of the best Ford transmissions around. It rated to withstand up to 506 foot-pounds of torque and has many upgrades including the J-Mod. With this modification, the Ford transmission offers faster engagement, quick shifting, a smoother ride, and increased life of the transmission.
