The Jaguar name made its first appearance as the SS Jaguar, a 2.5 Liter Saloon. The SS stood for Swallow Sidecar which then owned the brand name. Because of the notoriety of the SS initials in World War II, these initials were dropped in 1945 in favor of the marquee Jaguar. The name has, since then until today, become synonymous with fast sports cars. In fact, the fastest production model, the XJ220 which debuted in 1992 and remained the fastest until 1994, is still one of the top ten fastest cars in the world today.

There are three basic types of Jaguar transmissions - manual, automatic, and semiautomatic. These are mostly the close gear ratios of a sports model and may either be the 4-speed, 5-speed, or the relatively recent 6-speed when it comes to number of gears. Manual transmission is basically the same as the standard manual transmission found in most cars. Automatic transmissions make use of three planetary gears. The change power ratio signals the gear to shift to a higher or lower one depending on driving conditions. The semiautomatic version, however, aside from using planetary gears, utilizes the double-clutch system. As the car’s speed increases, each clutch “leapfrogs” over the other. If one clutch is at first gear, a second clutch hovers in second gear. It either shifts automatically once engine rpm reaches a certain value or the driver could initiate up shift through the steering column’s paddle controls.

The most recent development in Jaguar transmissions technology is the sequential shift. This makes use of the ZF Friedrichshafen AG 6HP26 transmission, for two-wheel drive cars. This shifting system is electronically enhanced to continually and intuitively adapt between fuel economy mode and sports performance mode depending on the drivers style. These adaptations are based on achieving as flat and as level a car body as possible during the ride. Each minute it makes approximately six thousand such adjustments depending on brake and throttle input from the driver. The ultimate result is a smoother ride at a lower fuel cost. It is also programmed to respond faster by about ten percent when in manual mode. Its most recent drive selector is now a rotary dial that moves up from its depressed location in the center of the console once the engine is started.
