Jeep transmissions

For those new to the workings of an automobile, a transmission is a part of an automobile connected via the back of the engine that sends the power from the engine to the wheels in order for them to spin and, therefore, drive. A transmission in order for the car can change gears and keep the car in control. Although the logistics of a transmission are complicated in a modern automatic transmission, brand names like Jeeps have come a long way since its inception in the 1940s.

Evolving Transmission Designs

Jeep transmissions vary significantly from one name to the next. Twenty five years ago, the Jeep Cherokee had a 2.5 liter engine as well as a V6 engine. Ten years ago, Jeep’s Grand Cherokee was almost the first six-speed transmission if it had not been for the fact it was programmed to use five of the ratios. As unfortunate as that might have been, Chrysler at the time did not even call it a five speed, but a four speed. Unlike its predecessor over ten years before, the 2009 Grand Cherokee Laredo is officially a five-speed automatic transmission. Historically speaking, this is one Jeep that highlights how far the Jeep transmission has come. There are currently 6 models out on the market, all of which use Jeep or AMC transmissions: Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Commander, Jeep Liberty, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot.

The New Ultradrive 42RLE

Today, there are many options for Jeep transmissions. However, one stands out. The Jeep Liberty and the Jeep Wrangler both use the Ultradrive 42RLE. With four gears and a torque ratio of two, this transmission is rear-wheel drive with full electronic shift control. Plus, the Ultradrive 42RLE has a Transmission Control Module (TMC) for adaptive memory that literally learns the driver’s habits to better the transmission and the drive.

As with any brand, Jeep transmissions vary. Like all brands, some transmissions are better than others, and sometimes car owners option to replace the Jeep transmission with a transmission of another make or from another brand. Nonetheless, with the newer models, Jeep transmissions tend to be sound, especially with the pull from the torque and elements such as TMC and the Electronically Modulated Converter Clutch or EMCC. Therefore, swapping out a transmission depends on the tastes of the owner or the state of the transmission.
