The first Mercury transmissions were designed by the Ford Motor Company and used in a variety of Mercury vehicles. One of the first designs was the three-speed automatic Ford-O-Matic, which was designed in 1950 by the Borg Warner Corporation. When installed into a Mercury vehicle, the Ford-O-Matic was renamed the Merc-O-Matic. The Merc-O-Matics use a torque converter and planetary gearset which mated the transmission to the drive shaft. This Mercury transmission provided three forward speeds and a reverse gear. In some cars, Mercury offered an option allowing the driver to start in either first gear or second gear.
It was later phased out by the AOD transmission when it was introduced in 1980. The AOD was Ford's first four-speed automatic transmission. This transmission had the same gearset as the Ford FMX. The AOD came to replace many of the older Mercury transmissions, which had either the Cruise-O-Matic or the C5. The AOD was used in Mercurys such as the 1980 to 1986 Mercury Marquis and the 1983 to 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis. It was also featured on all Mercury Cougars from 1980 to 1993. In 1991, the AOD was revised with electronic controls and renamed the AODE. It was created to be used in V8s but could also be adapted to the older AOD vehicles. The AOD and the AODE have many similar components such as the gears and oil pan but are not interchangeable due to the use of electronically shifted solenoids, which the AOD does not have. The AOD uses a throttle valve cable to operate, while the the AODE shift points are controlled by the Electronic Engine Control. The AODE is featured on all Mercury Grand Marquis' from 1993 to 1994. An updated version of the AODE was introduced in 1993 and named the 4R70W. This Ford design was used in Mercury transmissions that required faster acceleration, and improved gear strength. The 4R70W comes with a lower 1st and 2nd gear ratio – this allows for improved performance on Mercury vehicles. The 4R70W also has a performance cushion of up to 506 pounds of torque. This allows V8 engines be driven at their peak performance without issues of durability. This Mercury transmission is featured on the 1994 to 1997 Cougar and the 1995 to 2004 Grand Marquis.
