Used Transmissions
Porsche transmissions used in early models such as the 356, 912 and the original 911 were exclusively manual gearboxes. Beginning in the 1970s, Porsche started to offer automatic transmissions in its cars as an option. By the late 1990s, a large number of Porsche cars were equipped with TipTronic transmissions, which are automatics that have a manual shifting mode that is intended to provide a more sporty feel. Most recently, Porsche has started equipping cards with the PDK gearbox, which is a dual clutch transmission manufactured by ZF. A brief overview of recent Porsche models and transmissions is presented below.

Porsche Boxster

First released in 1997, the Porsche Boxster featured a 5-speed manual transmission manufactured by Aisin, or a 5 speed TipTronic shiftable automatic transmission made by ZF. Beginning in 2000, the Boxter S was offered with a 6-speed manual transmission sourced from Getrag. Starting in 2009, the redesigned Boxster came standard with a 6-speed manual transmission but offered the PDK dual clutch automatic transmission as an available option.

Porsche 996/997

The Porsche 996 came with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed automatic transmission. Like many Porsche transmissions, the units themselves are sourced from Getrag. The latest generation of the 911, namely the 997, is offered with either a 6-speed manual or PDK gearbox by ZF.

Porsche Cayenne

The Porsche Cayenne debuted in 2002, and was available with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. Beginning with the 2nd generation Cayenne, an 8 speed automatic transmission sourced from Aisin was used.

Porsche Cayman

The Cayman is the hardtop variant of the Boxster which was released beginning in 2005. It was offered with a choice of four transmissions, including a 5-speed or 6-speed manual, a TipTronic automatic transmission, and most recently the 7-speed dual clutch PDK gearbox.

Panamera

First introduced in 2009, the four-door Porsche Panamera was brought to market with the choice of either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed PDK dual clutch gearbox by ZF.

Porsche recommends a 120,000 mile interval between fluid changes in its automatic transmissions, and specifies a 90,000 mile service interval for manual gearboxes. Many independent garages suggest fluid changes for both types of Porsche transmissions at intervals of no more than 48,000 miles or 4 years.
