Subaru transmissions have been created by JATCO since 1975. JATCO designs included the 3AT transmission – first featured in the 1975 Subaru Leone – and the 3AT First Revision. Other models designed and created by JATCO were the 3EAT – which was an electronic controlled 3AT for all wheel drive vehicle such as the 1985 to 1989 Subaru XT and Subaru BRAT. The 4EAT transmission, introduced in 1988, is a 4 speed transmission that comes with a lock up torque converter and is still being used in Subarus today. They come with all Subaru EJ engines and all practically the same transmission with minor changes to the bell housing and the input shaft.
In 1984, Subaru developed a continuously variable transmission called the 5MT Justy. It was created specifically for the Subaru Justy to gain more power and improve fuel economy in its engine. The transmission for the Justy comes with an option to use 4WD if a button on the shifter is pressed, thus, engaging the rear wheels. This Subaru transmission was phased out by the 5MT 4WD in 1988. Currently, Subaru provides the 5MT in most vehicles made after 1990 with an EJ engine.
The Subaru WRX STi and the Subaru Legacy spec. B are the only Subarus in the US equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission(6MT). All standard STis come with the 6MT which uses short shift mechanics to make shifting easier and quicker. It also comes with a well developed lubrication system to prevent transmission failure. Subaru's 6-speed transmission was created to harness the 300 lb-ft of torque created by the 2.5 liter boxer engine. Subaru transmissions are designed for smooth shifting and using as little engine power as possible. A 6 speed transmission allows the driver to have more control over power distribution when driving. The 6MT from the Legacy spec. B is often swapped into the WRX STi because it has longer gear ratios and delivers more power.
