One of the first Plymouth transmissions was the TorqueFlite, introduced in 1956. It was created by the Chrysler Company and has been put into many Plymouths. Its predecessor, the PowerFlite, was created just 2 years earlier as Plymouth’s first automatic transmission. The two-speed PowerFlite was quite durable and simple to operate. Its construction was less complicated than its competition and was featured on the Plymouth 6. One option the PowerFlite did not have was a ‘park’ feature. Instead, it was necessary to use the handbrake to keep the car stationary. This led to the creation of the three-speed TorqueFlite. Once the TorqueFlite was introduced, the PowerFlite was discontinued. It remained in some Plymouths until 1961 but was eventually phased out of production. The invention of the aluminum case TorqueFlite allowed for a parking lock to be added in 1960. The first TorqueFlite which had this parking lock was the standard-duty A-904. In 1962, it was also added to the heavy-duty A-727. By 1962, Plymouth was experimenting with the canister fluid filter for its transmission. For the 1964 Plymouth transmissions, the canister was replaced with an internal screen and then replaced again with the better Dacron filter. Transmission fluid changes were extended from 12,000 miles (19,000 km) to 50,000 miles (80,000 km). This improvement eliminated the need for drain plugs in the transmission oil pan.
Chrysler developed the A404 TorqueFlite for the Plymouth Horizon and the Reliant, which were named the K-car engines. The Horizon and the Reliant used a 4 cylinder engine and required only the light-duty A404. This subcompact car’s transmission would be updated in 80s and renamed the A413 and A670. These Plymouth transmissions were made to be a heavier duty grade and installed into minivans and other vehicles. Made in 1981, the A413 was a tougher version of the A404 and came with or without a lockup torque converter.
